Liner Notes for "Hwanhee Bora Baekjak"
Butterfly's new EP, "Hwanhee Bora Babak," which is a welcome release after 8 years, brings us the joy of encountering the "ultraviolet" outside, or the invisible realm that we cannot easily see, just like its title suggests.
In retrospect, Line 3 Butterfly has always been this way. Rather than aiming to construct a grand narrative or convey a specific linguistic meaning, Line 3 Butterfly has focused on the seemingly impossible endeavor of musically reproducing a scene through the auditory object of sound. However, Line 3 Butterfly's musical approach should not be understood as simply an effort to reproduce the sounds of actual events, or as a form of film music that seeks to realistically reproduce the sounds of objects in a specific scene. Rather, the way Line 3 Butterfly's music operates is closer to the literary pursuit of pure poetry, which seeks to elicit specific emotions by minimizing semantic layers of language and emphasizing phonological ones.
The lyrics of track 2, and track 3, , can be felt to be composed of somewhat fragmented language, but this poetic lyric writing style of Seong Gi-wan (as has been the case with 3rd Line Butterfly's previous works) plays a role in contributing to the auditory depiction of a certain scene in .Hwanhee Bora Bak..
Also playing a crucial role is Nam Sang-ah's vocals, recently returned from a long journey to France. Her unique husky quality, unwavering, creates a dreamy atmosphere. Rather than imbuing the music with specific meaning or connotations, her vocals function as a literal "voice," operating as a unique musical element.
Furthermore, Kim Nam-yoon's bass acts as a central point, solidly maintaining the center amidst the irregularly mixed electronic and psychedelic sounds throughout the album, and 3rd Line Butterfly successfully attempts to musically evoke an image in "Hwanhee Bora Barak."
However, that doesn't mean the new EP, "Hwanhee Bora Baek," simply repeats the strategies of their previous works. On the surface, 3rd Line Butterfly is once again attempting to expand their genre spectrum. Of course, this is not a new story. In fact, 3rd Line Butterfly has always sought change. While they've always sailed on the foundations of rock, they haven't always remained stationary. Sometimes lyrical noise, other times psychedelic synthesizers and guitar loops, even danceable electronica... The sounds and forms that form the core of 3rd Line Butterfly's music have constantly evolved. And now, with "Hwanhee Bora Baek," they branch out in multiple directions simultaneously. For example, the fast BPM drums heard in the middle and latter half of the third track, , are closer to drum and bass or jungle, a genre that 3rd Line Butterfly has never attempted before, and the fifth track, <20 Years Ago Today>, has a slightly ballad-like atmosphere through its soft vocals and flute-based soft melody, making one think of various genres.
Thanks to this genre-bending approach, 3rd Line Butterfly creates aurally distinct scenes. For example, the synthesizer solo in track 1, "Your Whisper," the keyboard in track 2, "Freedom of Aquatic Plants," and the flute in track 5, "20 Years Ago Today," evoke a retro vibe rarely found in their previous works, creating a sense of leisure and tranquility. This is particularly noteworthy in that it marks a significant departure from their fourth album, "Dreamtalk" (2012), which evoked a tense auditory landscape through layered textures created by Sung Ki-wan's psychedelic guitar sound and the members' choruses. Similarly, their fifth album, "Divided by Zero" (2017), showcased a danceable atmosphere through the full-throttle emphasis on electronica.
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, purple. Let's name the seven colors that make up the rainbow in order. But then, does that mean there's nothing after purple? Purple is simply the shortest wavelength of light we can see, not the extreme end of the color spectrum. This is because ultraviolet rays, invisible to our eyes but clearly present, are located at one end of the color spectrum. What Line 3 Butterfly encounters in "Outside the Purple" are precisely those beautiful and wonderful wavelengths of light that cannot be seen with the eyes but still exist outside the purple. Jus...
